Top 10 Strike Partnerships

Strike partnerships are a thing of the past these days as the majority of teams play with one up top instead of two.

We saw some great duos when they were around though with one player maybe coming short and the other going long.

To be an effective partnership, you first of all need to know and have a good understanding with your partner, look out for each other on the pitch, and lastly score goals.

When I look back at my list, the partnership I feel that I should've had on the list was Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke from Man United's 1999 treble winning side. That partnership for me is the greatest in Premier League history and I don't know why I didn't think of them when doing this list.

That's not the only iconic partnership to miss the cut though. Harry Kane and Heung Min Son aren't on the list and neither is Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney.

Now here is the list:

Andriy Shevchenko and Filippo Inzaghi

Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema

Thomas Muller and Robert Lewandowski

Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez

Raul and Ronaldo

Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane

Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba

Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp

Ronaldinho and Samuel Eto'o

Neymar and Kylian Mbappe

  1. Neymar and Kylian Mbappe

Neymar and Mbappe joined PSG at the same time and went on to have a successful time together as they won five Ligue 1 titles and three French Cups.

They weren't your most traditional partnership as they both played out wide but they did find each other on the end of each others crosses.

They had a decent partnership at PSG as they combined for 54 goals together in all competitions but despite the potential they both had as players, they didn't win the Champions League.

I had to put them in 10th because they didn't do it enough in the Champions League and there were in all fairness a number of reasons why that was.

  1. Andriy Shevchenko and Filippo Inzaghi

Shevchenko and Inzaghi were a formidable duo together at AC Milan as both players were natural born goal scorers.

They didn't link up on the pitch a great deal, but their ability to score goals were what made them a prolific duo up top with Shevchenko getting the majority of them.

They won the Champions League in 2003 and the Serie A title in 2004 together at Milan and their goals were a major part in both successes.

  1. Ronaldinho and Samuel Eto'o

Ronaldinho and Eto'o were an incredible duo together at Barcelona with their partnership playing a massive role in Barca winning back-to-back La Liga titles in 2005 and 2006 and the Champions League in 2006 also.

They linked up with each other so many times on the pitch as they always knew where each other were, and when to play the ball to each other.

They weren't your traditional strike partnership as Ronaldinho was a winger instead of a centre forward. But they still had a productive partnership throughout their time together at Barca.

  1. Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane

Salah and Mane had a strong partnership throughout their time together at Liverpool and they were both wingers instead of centre forwards.

They both always looked out for each other on the pitch and the goals they both scored were a massive part of Liverpool's success during their time together.

They were both competitive as well as they had a competition going in who can score the most goals which did in all fairness cause a bit of friction between the pair. But it also drove them to be better players as they both wanted to score as many goals as they could.

  1. Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba

Lampard and Drogba led the all-time Premier League charts for goal combinations for many years with 36 goals between them.

They weren't your traditional strike partnership as they both played in different positions, but they still had a great partnership on the pitch as Lampard always knew where Drogba was on the pitch, when to play the ball to him and vice versa.

They won everything on offer during their time at Chelsea including three Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2012 with their partnership and goal combinations playing a vital role in all of them.

  1. Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp

If this was the best Premier League strike partnerships, Henry and Bergkamp would be higher because their partnership was one of the greatest the Premier League ever saw.

Bergkamp was Arsenal's main goal threat when he first arrived at the club but when Henry arrived, he dropped deeper and became their main creator with Henry being the main goal threat.

The partnership these two had played a massive role in Arsenal going the entire season unbeaten in 2004 and in the other success they achieved together at Arsenal.

  1. Raul and Ronaldo

Raul and Ronaldo are two of the greatest strikers to play the game and they had a prolific partnership during their time at Real Madrid.

They didn't win a lot together during their time at Real and it was probably because of Real having too many world stars which led to an uncohesive team.

But they did link up and score a lot goals during their years together at Real Madrid becoming one of the deadliest partnerships in La Liga at the time.

  1. Thomas Muller and Robert Lewandowski

Muller and Lewandowski had a brilliant partnership throughout their time together at Bayern Munich as they had such a good understanding of one another and always knew where to find each other on the pitch.

They linked up many times on the pitch with Muller in the no.10 role mostly providing the chances for Lewandowski to score. But there were times where they swapped positions with Lewandowski being the provider and Muller being the finisher, especially when Muller was making a run into the box.

They won eight Bundesliga titles and the Champions League during their time together at Bayern and their partnership played a major part in every success they achieved together.

  1. Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez

Messi and Suarez had a brilliant partnership throughout their time together at Barcelona as they linked up many times and scored many goals between them.

They scored 99 goals between them during their time together at Barca and the goals they scored between them played a huge role in the success they achieved together, and even carried the team during their latter years together when Barca were declining.

They became very close friends off the pitch as well as on it during their time at Barca and have been ever since.

They're now back together at Inter Miami in the MLS where their partnership is still as strong as it was before.

  1. Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema

Ronaldo and Benzema had to be my no.1 both because of the great partnership they had and what they won together.

They won two La Liga titles and four Champions League's during their nine seasons together at Real Madrid and scored 73 goals between them.

The goals they scored and their partnership on the pitch took Real back to the top of European football and played a major role in their success together.
