What needs to happen at Spurs?

Spurs sacked Antonio Conte yesterday over a week after his explosive post match press conference after Spurs' 3-3 draw with Southampton. That was probably what cost him his job alongside inconsistent form and a lack of silverware.

It's been 15 years since Spurs last won a trophy and Conte was brought in to win the club silverware. But he failed like all the other Spurs managers during that time.

They have a big summer ahead of them both on and off the pitch and there is a list of things that need to happen at the club if they're to get to where they want to be:

Mentality

Spurs have become known for having a weak mentality for a number of years and it was one of the things that Conte spoke about during his post match press conference after the Southampton game. He was right in what he said because Spurs' mentality in big moments had let them down when the pressure has been on them.

If Spurs are to win trophies and challenge for titles they need to have a stronger mentality. The responsibility will fall upon the players as they're the ones who step out onto the pitch. But the manager also has to take some of the blame because he was supposed to instil that mentality into his players. Conte wasn't able to do that for some reason.

Whoever the next manager is will need to instil that mentality into his players if they're to go on to that next step. But he might need to bring in some characters in order for that to happen as Spurs don't have many of them.

Recruitment

Spurs' recruitment has been quite mixed in recent years as they've made both good and bad signings with the majority of them being bad. But when you look at the players they've brought in over the last few seasons none of them have taken the club onto the next level.

They obviously don't have the riches that Man City and Chelsea have but they can still try and buy players who have that winners mentality or experience of challenging for major honours. They haven't won anything because of them not signing that calibre of player. Getting that player could be the difference for them.

The future of Harry Kane

Kane's contract is up next summer and it's unlikely that he'll sign a new one because of Spurs' lack of silverware. He clearly loves the club as he's been there his whole career and came through the academy. But with Kane turning 30 this summer alongside Spurs' lack of silverware, he may want to move on in order to fulfil his ambitions.

They'll of course do everything they can to try and keep hold of him because of how important he is to the team. But if Spurs are serious about wanting to win silverware, they need to get his future sorted ASAP or they'll face losing him either this summer or next summer for free.

The next manager

Spurs' recent choices of manager haven't worked out and to some extent have been desperate. Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte were brought in because they needed someone to get them over the line in terms of winning the trophy. Nuno Espirito Santo was appointed because none of their top targets at the time were available or didn't want the job. All three failed because results weren't good enough and their brands of football were not pretty to watch.

If their next appointment is to be the right one, Daniel Levy and the board will need to think what kind of manager they want. A young upcoming manager with a long term project or someone with experience of winning trophies.

They'll want someone who will play an attacking brand of football as the fans were fed up with the brand of football they were watching under Conte like they were under Mourinho. The players they have are better suited to an attacking brand of football where they're more likely to express themselves and play to their own strengths.

The board will preferably want both. A manager who can set his team up to play that attacking style and have a vision in mind. Spurs have lacked that kind of manager since Pochettino left.
