Top 10 Worst Premier League Teams

I did the top 10 newly promoted teams a couple of months ago and this week I'm doing the complete opposite in the worst teams in Premier League history.

Like I said a few months ago, staying in the Premier League is tough for any newly promoted side as many have found out over the years. All of them just haven't had the experience or quality in their squad to stay or compete in the Premier League.

The gap between the Premier League and the Championship is definitely getting bigger as we've seen more recently with last season's newly promoted teams all going straight back down and this season's new batch also struggling and likely to meet the same fate. Two of them are already down in Southampton and Leicester.

The Southampton team from this season are not on the list as this season is still being played and the list itself was made a few months back. Had I done the list at the end of the season, they probably would be on it.

The list doesn't just have teams who were newly promoted, but also teams who were in the Premier League before the season they were relegated and all of them finished bottom.

One team I left out and probably should've put on the list was the Sunderland team that got relegated in 2006 with just 15 points. There is a Sunderland team in the list, but not the one I just mentioned.

Now here is the list:

Swindon - 1993/94

Sheffield United - 2020/21

Huddersfield - 2018/19

Derby - 2007/08

Norwich - 2021/22

Aston Villa - 2015/16

West Brom - 2008/09

Sheffield United - 2023/24

Southampton - 2022/23

Sunderland - 2016/17

  1. Sunderland - 2016/17

Sunderland's relegation in 2017 was definitely coming as they spent the previous few seasons battling relegation and pulling off great escapes until their luck ran out in 2017.

There were signs in the summer that it was going to happen as Sam Allardyce, the manager who kept them up the season before, left to take the England job and his replacement David Moyes wasn't backed to bring in new players.

Moyes even admitted early in the season that his team were going to be in a relegation battle and it turned out that way as they finished at the foot of the table and stayed there for most of the season.

They were heavily reliant on Jermain Defoe's goals that season and it was Defoe and a young Jordan Pickford in goal who were their only shining lights that season.

  1. Southampton - 2022/23

Southampton were an absolute mess both on and off the pitch during this season as they struggled badly at both ends on it whilst off the pitch, their recruitment was poor as they signed a load of young players who were unproven in the Premier League and had to go through three managers.

Ralph Hasenhuttl was sacked following a poor run of form and was replaced by Nathan Jones who didn't fare much better as he was sacked after just four months in charge. They ended the season with interim manager Ruben Selles.

James Ward-Prowse was their only shining light that season and they were over reliant on him all season to come up with a moment of brilliance.

  1. Norwich - 2021/22

This Norwich team had just bounced straight back up after having gone down a couple of seasons before and this team was the worse of the two sides.

They spent the majority of the season at the foot of the table and had the same problems they had from their last spell in conceding too many goals and not scoring many either.

They were criticized for being too open defensively, just like they were in their previous spell, and they were too reliant on Teemu Pukki, whose goals were what got them promoted.

  1. West Brom - 2008/09

I remember this West Brom team from the first season I started following football and all I remember about them was that they spent most of the losing.

They had very little Premier League experience and quality in their squad and spent the majority of the season at the foot of the table.

It was surprising that they kept manager Tony Mowbray in charge for the entire season as most clubs would've sacked their manager if they lost as many games as the Baggies did that season.

  1. Sheffield United - 2020/21

Sheffield United surprised everyone in the season before their relegation by finishing 9th and even making a push for Europe.

But in the following season they were hit by the second season syndrome as they finished at the foot of the table and didn't win a game till January of that season after picking up just two points in the first half of the season.

Not having their fans due to COVID played a massive part as they really struggled without their home support. Maybe things might've been different had COVID not happened, but we'll never know.

  1. Aston Villa - 2015/16

Aston Villa are one of the biggest clubs in the country who have had some great players play for them over their long history.

But their team from 2016 was has to be the worst team in their history as they showed very little fight and desire to win games throughout the season.

The club at the time was in a right mess as it was being poorly run behind the scenes and the atmosphere around the place was toxic because of the latter and the team's poor performances.

They had to change manager twice during the season with Tim Sherwood being sacked following a poor run of form and replaced by Remi Garde, under whom things got worse before he was eventually dismissed before the end of the season.

Their relegation was in all fairness coming as they spent the previous few seasons in consecutive relegation battles. They also lost two of their most important players heading into the season in Fabian Delph and Christian Benteke which also played a massive part.

  1. Swindon - 1993/94

Younger fans probably wouldn't believe me if I told them that Swindon once played in the Premier League. Well, they did and they had just one season in 1993/94.

They finished rock bottom with 30 points in their only Premier League season and conceding 100 goals, which was the record for most goals conceded in a single season for many years.

They just never had the quality to compete in the top flight as the stats and their results suggests. But it didn't help that the manager who got them up in Glenn Hoddle left to take the Chelsea job.

They haven't been anywhere near the Premier League ever since their relegation as they've spent last two decades floundering between the lower divisions of the EFL.

  1. Sheffield United - 2023/24

This Sheffield United side were terrible from start to finish as they had very little Premier League quality in their squad, and conceded a record breaking 104 goals.

The signs were there before the start of the season as they lost two of their most important players from their promotion season in Iliman Ndiaye and Sander Berge, and they struggled to bring in new players during the summer.

Paul Heckingbottom started the season in charge until he was sacked and replaced by the returning Chris Wilder. But things continued to get worse after his arrival as they carried on losing games and some by a big score line.

  1. Huddersfield - 2018/19

Huddersfield defied the odds in their first season in the Premier League by staying up when pretty much everyone wrote them off.

But in their second season they were hit by the second season syndrome as they finished bottom of the league with 16 points, the third joint lowest total in Premier League history.

Goals were their biggest problem during their short spell in the Premier League and especially during their relegation season as they scored just 22 times all season.

Since their relegation from the Premier League, they've spent all but one of their seasons near the bottom of the Championship before their eventual relegation to League 1 last season.

  1. Derby - 2007/08

Derby's team from 2008 had to be at no.1 because they recorded the lowest points total in Premier League history with 11.

They won just one game all season with that sole win coming against Newcastle early on in the season and their team just didn't have the quality to compete in the Premier League.

They scored just 20 goals that season which still remains the lowest amount of goals scored in a single season. At the other end they shipping in 89 goals with only three teams conceding more in Premier League history.

MY TOP 10:

  1. Derby - 2007/08

  2. Huddersfield - 2018/19

  3. Sheffield United - 2023/24

  4. Swindon - 1993/94

  5. Aston Villa - 2015/16

  6. Sheffield United - 2020/21

  7. West Brom - 2008/09

  8. Norwich - 2021/22

  9. Southampton - 2022/23

  10. Sunderland - 2016/17
